Next Generation Ethernet
In order to increase the flexibility and scalability of lightpaths, a complete new Ethernet layer will be introduced. This is based on Next Generation Ethernet (NGE) technology such as PBB/PBBTR/PLSB or MPLS-TP.
Using NGE can help make existing fixed lightpaths simpler and more flexible. It also allows dynamic lightpaths to be set up and closed down faster.
NGE also makes new Ethernet-based services possible, for example point-to-multipoint connections. GigaPort3 will define and introduce useful services for researchers and users.
The IP routing and the lightpaths will be migrated from the existing Ethernet aggregation level of the network to the NGE layer as soon as production of this commences.
