Multicast

SURFnet6 supports Multicast, a technology that makes possible real-time multimedia applications such as streaming video in an efficient and relatively inexpensive manner. There is therefore growing interest in Multicast at the connected institutions, which are increasingly adapting their networks so as to use this technology.

Multicast involves sending a data stream from a source only once, regardless of the number of recipients. This means, for example, that dozens of students can participate in a virtual seminar. The server sends a single data stream and the network ensures that audio and video reach everyone who is connected. Multicast means a major saving on the quantity of data traffic that needs to be sent and reduces the load on the network.

Popular applications for Multicast include lectures, videoconferencing, television broadcasts, multi-player gaming, simulations, and synchronisation of distributed systems. Multicast is suitable not only for use within an institution but also for use at student residences and by students working at home.

In addition to high-quality video streaming, many more applications are possible: database updates, file sharing and caching, announcements, monitoring, news distribution, interactive simulations, and distributed processing.
