GIGAPORT

GigaPort3

GigaPort3 is the successor to the GigaPort Next Generation Network project. The aim is:

  • to take the SURFnet network infrastructure to a higher level;
  • to make possible the next generation of networks;
  • to support dynamic services with a state-of-the-art and scalable hybrid network.

GigaPort3 builds on the successful implementation of SURFnet6, the first national hybrid optical and packet-switching infrastructure in the world. By utilising new technology in and on top of the existing SURFnet6 network, GigaPort3 creates the new SURFnet7 network.

SURFnet7 will comprise a complete new Ethernet layer. New facilities and bandwidths (up to 100 Gbit/s and perhaps even higher) will also be tested – and where necessary/possible introduced – on the optical and IP routing layers. SURFnet7 will also soon be offering flexible on-demand access by means of intelligent middleware solutions to the network facilities and to all parts of the ICT research infrastructure.

The budget for the GigaPort3 project (which runs from 2009 to 2013) is EUR 37 million. SURFnet is carrying out the project under the supervision of SURF and in cooperation with suppliers, users, and research partners.

GigaPort3 means that the Netherlands will continue to have a state-of-the-art research network. The project will reinforce the leading global position of the hybrid SURFnet network.

GigaPort3 consists of seven subsidiary projects:
