SURFWORKS

Apllication Areas

SURFnet’s network and services are applicable in a wider field than just higher education and research. SURFnet has recently achieved a number of successes in collaboration with partners from various social sectors. Examples are the live broadcasts of TV shows over the Internet together with the public broadcasting companies and the Internet elections for the Rijnland en Dommel Water Management Board in which 1.7 millions voters participated.

The SURFworks Application Areas subproject defines collaborative projects that are aimed at social or scientific applications. SURF intends to underline the social relevance of the GigaPort project through this project line.

Seven projects have been selected in 2008:

Social:
  • DigiBob: digitising population screening for breast cancer;
  • CineGrid : setting up a community of distributed productions for cinemas.
  • RIES: implementing an Internet election system.
Scientific:
  • Large Hadron Collider (LHC): distributed data processing and analysis of measurements from the CERN particle accelerator in Geneva;
  • E-VLBI – Lambda connections for correlating astronomical measurements from telescopes all over the globe;
  • DAS-3 – grid infrastructure for supercomputers in the Netherlands;
  • DEISA – construction of a European infrastructure to link super computer centres.
