4K VIDEO / CINEGRID

4K video / CineGrid

Sharper than the eye can perceive and perfect audio: that’s 4K video, a new video format that is no less than four times sharper than High Definition video (HD). This makes new applications possible in higher education and research.

From showcases to best practices

4K video turns moving images into a special and intense experience. 4K video makes details visible that would otherwise be lost. Over the past few years, SURFnet has been working with the Waag Society on various projects to experiment with this technology and to develop showcases. The CineGrid digital cinema testbed is a way of displaying the superior picture quality of this video format.

The 4K video facility was used in 2010 to transfer know-how and expertise about 4K productions to the higher education and research sector. The intention is to develop best practices for utilising 4K material for teaching purposes. Workshops, best practices, and presentations/demonstrations will promote the use of 4K video and lead to it being adopted in higher education and research.

CineGrid

SURFnet is partner in the CineGrid Amsterdam project. CineGrid Amsterdam is the first European node in the worldwide CineGrid network in which super-high-quality video is developed, distributed and displayed. It involves “4K cinema”, which offers numerous new possibilities for science and education, but also for culture and entertainment. The initiative for CineGrid Amsterdam came from SURFnet, SARA, the University of Amsterdam, and the Waag Society.
