Enlighten Your Research competition winners announced

Utrecht 7 December 2011 – The jury of the Enlighten Your Research competition has announced the four main prizewinners and the winner of the special sustainability prize. The winning proposals illustrate how to create innovative applications with the power of e-infrastructure, the combined use of central storage and computing capacity, grid infrastructure, and high-throughput connectivity via lightpaths. The winners will be given access to the requested e-infrastructure for a period of two years in order to turn their proposal into reality.

Winners

The proposal that received the jury’s highest marks was Jan Bot’s “Next Generation Networking for Next Generation Sequencing” (Delft University of Technology). Second place was taken by “Implementation of a Centralized Image Processing Unit to Facilitate Large-Scale Population Imaging Studies” by Henri Vrooman (Erasmus Medical Centre). Sharing third place were “Stream in the Netherlands: an E-Infrastructure for Distributed Visual Analysis of Flooding Scenarios” by Gerwin de Haan (Delft University of Technology) and “CONCLUDE: Connecting Climate Model Data for Scientific Users and Decision Makers” by Wilco Hazeleger (Wageningen University).

Sustainability prize

The sustainability prize goes to the proposal that makes the smartest use of energy. The winner was “High-Performance Distributed Multi-Model / Multi-Kernel Simulations” by Frank Seinstra (VU University Amsterdam), which utilises smart software that makes efficient use of the architecture and the resources.

Prizes

The main winners may use the requested infrastructure for a two-year period, free of charge. They will also receive support for implementation and EUR 20,000 in prize money. The winner of the sustainability prize will also be given the requested infrastructure and support, as well as EUR 15,000 in prize money.

Take your e-infrastructure to the next level

Enlighten Your Research was organised for the third time by SURFnet, SARA, BiG Grid, and NWO. This year’s theme was “Take your e-infrastructure to the next level”. “We want to encourage researchers to use the power of e-infrastructure,” explains Erwin Bleumink, chairman of the jury and managing director of SURFnet. “The winners of Enlighten Your Research 3 have shown that e-infrastructure opens up new possibilities in research. That makes them a source of inspiration for other researchers.”
