Nine contenders for Enlighten Your Research 3 competition
SURFnet, SARA, BiG Grid, and NWO announce nominees
Utrecht – Nine research proposals are moving up to the next round of the “Enlighten Your Research 3” competition (EYR3). The competition challenges researchers to submit research proposals for cross-institutional partnerships that can benefit from high-quality network connections. The organisers of EYR3 – SURFnet, SARA, BiG Grid, and the NWO – intend the competition to promote research between sites with e-Research facilities. A total of fourteen teams submitted a proposal.
Broad range
The research proposals come from various different disciplines, with the humanities, life sciences, and climate research being strongly represented. The proposals make use of the opportunities that the organisers of EYR3 are offering. SURFnet’s Nicole Grégoire, the competition coordinator, explains: “Almost all the project proposals require a combination of data storage, computing capacity, and advanced connectivity. The competitors have fully appreciated the opportunities offered by the competition and have focused their proposals accordingly. In the next round, we will be considering the technical and organisational feasibility of those proposals.”
Prizes
The participants will work out their proposals in greater detail over the next few months. The winners will be announced in November. Competing researchers can win free data storage, computing time, advanced network connections, and support for implementation. The winners will also receive a maximum cash prize of EUR 20,000. This year, there is also an additional prize for the proposal that makes the greatest contribution to the sustainability of eResearch.
The teams must submit the final version of their proposal by no later than 30 September 2011. The prizes will be presented in November 2011.
