Sustainability

Being clever with energy

Sustainability is a frequent topic of discussion nowadays. For public education and research institutions, sustainability implies in any case the obligation to comply with the national targets originating, for example, in the Kyoto Protocol. Many institutions go further than this, however, and aim to make an active contribution by being one of the leaders in sustainability.

For SURFnet, sustainability means dealing responsibly with human and natural resources. SURFnet pursues a sustainable purchasing policy, for example, and closely monitors its energy consumption. SURFnet is also working to make its services more sustainable. It first analyses consumption and then introduces appropriate measures.

With its sister organisations SURFfoundation and SURFdiensten, SURFnet also acknowledges a responsibility as regards building up expertise and sharing it with the institutions. A Strategic Plan is therefore being produced and a Special Interest Group has been set up.
