Connected institutions
Users and user policy
SURFnet provides high-quality network services for higher education and research institutions. Students, instructors, researchers, and network administrators make use of our network every day.
Institutions
SURFnet connects up all institutions that belong to its target group:
- Research universities
- University hospitals and tertiary medical teaching hospitals (STZs)
- Hogescholen (i.e. “universities of applied sciences”)
- Research institutes and comparable institutions
- Company R&D departments
- Libraries
- Other institutions financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
The ICT services provided for these institutions comprise full Internet connectivity and are intended for both staff and students of the connected institutions. You can apply to be connected by filling in the application form (in Dutch).
There is a list of connected institutions and their contact persons (ICP) . This can only be accessed from a computer that is connected to the SURFnet network.
Schools and cultural institutions (ESPs and CSPs)
Any institution financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science can utilise the SURFnet network. There are too many such institutions for them all to be served directly by the SURFnet organisation. A model has therefore been developed with Educational Service Providers (ESPs) for schools (primary and secondary) and Cultural Service Providers (CSPs) for cultural institutions (for example the Waag Society in Amsterdam).
Any ISP or other institution or company can act as an ESP or CSP and is then entitled, subject to the same conditions, to place the traffic of institutions belonging to our target group on our network. ESPs and CSPs do not have access to our other services; they provide their own services for schools and cultural institutions. An ESP or CSP can ask to be connected as follows:
GigaPort connections
In the framework of the GigaPort project, other Dutch organisations are permitted to be connected to the SURFnet network for the sole purpose of testing and developing advanced network technologies and applications. You can request to be connected in the framework of GigaPort by filing in the application form (in Dutch).
